What is an EIN?

Back to FAQs

A Federal Tax ID is also what is called an Employer Identification Number (EIN). It is a nine-digit number formatted like 12-3456789. The document used to apply for a Tax ID/EIN is IRS Form SS-4. You can obtain an empty SS-4 and prepare and file it yourself free of charge by starting at this link. Or you can choose our simple online tool to prepare and file the application for the EIN on your behalf. Starting with our proprietary one-page form, everything you see will apply to your specific situation based on your input.

New EINs can be used immediately for most of your business needs including opening a bank account, applying for local business licenses, and filing a tax return by mail.
