Once you apply online for a fed tax ID, it should take approximately 24 hours for your order to process. Once the order has been fulfilled, you’ll receive your tax ID number, also called an Employer Identification Number (EIN) via email. To check up on it, you can also check status of EIN online.
You can begin using your tax ID number as soon as you get it to do things, with a few exceptions.
It takes approximately two weeks for the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to mail all the official documentation to you. During those two weeks the IRS also files your documents in its permanent records. Until you receive official documentation from the IRS, and until it has filed the documents internally, you will not be able to use your EIN to file a tax return, or make an electronic tax payment.

Using Your Tax ID Immediately
Although you won’t be able to file a tax return immediately, there are several business activities you will be able to accomplish immediately after you receive your tax ID or EIN.
For example, you will be able to open a bank account in your company’s name and apply for local permits or licenses. You do not need to wait for final processing to do these things.
